Ruben Amorim: I won’t change my philosophy, you have to change the man

Manchester United Manager, Ruben Amorim, said the club has to dismiss him before changing his philosophy.

Amorim’s team was exposed again when they failed 3-0 in the derby on Sunday against Manchester City in the Etihad Stadium.

The loss leaves you with just four points from her first four Premier League games and after the 15th place last season, the Portuguese remains under considerable pressure to deliver.

Amorim won only eight league games as United Boss and refused to vary his tactical approach, regardless of the results since he arrived in Old Trafford last November.

“It is not a recording that we should have at Manchester United,” said Amorim in his press conference after the game. “I accept that, but I won’t change.

“If I want to change my philosophy, I will change, but if not, you have to change the man.

“We will talk about every game that we lose about it. I played my way and will play my way until I want to change.”

When it was pointed out that the fans could lose confidence in him, Amorim insisted that he felt the disappointment more than her.

He said: “I understand. This is normal (with) the results. I accept that, but I don’t see it that way.

“I see that we are better, but the results don’t show that.

“My message (to fans) is that I will do everything. I always think about what is best for the club.

“It is always the same message and the rest is not my decision. (As long) I am here, I will do my best.

“I really want to win games. I suffer more than you.”

United was competitive in the first half, but fell back to a header from Phil Foden after 18 minutes.

City increased the intensity in the second period, with Erling Haaland took over the process, scored twice and also reached the post.

It was a strong reaction from City after the international break.

Manager Pep Guardiola said: “We have to improve, but win games, especially the derby, and the faces of our fans to see, the joy, happiness after the game better and better.

“It’s just a game, but body language was incredible and the spirit was really good.”

Haaland had explained before the game that the city had to improve, and Guardiola was satisfied with his reaction.

Guardiola said: “Erling never disappointed us. That’s why he extended the contract for many years. He was a special player, but we have many of them.”

Guardiola also praised Foden after the English international had suffered a difficult, injury-related season 2024-25.

He said: “We missed him so much last season and we need him so much.

“Hopefully, step by step, he can return to his best and I am pretty sure that we are a game like today, we will have the best Phil.”
