SpaceX will bring Northrop Grumman’s new “Cygnus XL” charging ship to the international space station (ISS) on his debut mission this evening (September 14th) and you can watch the action live.
A Falcon 9 rocket that carries the Cygnus freighter is scheduled to start today at 6.11 p.m. Edt (2211 GMT) by Floridas Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
SpaceX and NASA will stream the start live, starting about 30 minutes before lifting. Space.com will wear the agency’s feed if it is made available.
The mission is known as NG-23 because it is the 23rd load effort that Norththrop Grumman flies to the ISS for NASA. NG-23 will be the first cynus upswing since August 2024 when NG-21 has undertaken the flight.
NG-22 was to follow in January of this year, but was delayed due to avionary problems to June. At the end of March, NASA announced that NG-22 had been deported due to damage to the cygnus that was incurred during the transport.
NG-23 marks the debut of the Cygnus XL, a larger and more capable version of the experienced freighter. The previous iteration moved about £ 8,500 freight into the ISS, but Cygnus XL takes £ 11,000 on this trip (£ 4,990 kg).
Under the supplies packed on board the freighter, “materials for the production of semiconductor crystals are in space and devices to develop improvements for cryogenic fuel tanks,” the NASA officers wrote in a statement. “The spaceship will also provide a special UV lighting system to prevent the growth of microbe communities that form in water systems and care to produce pharmaceutical crystals that could treat cancer and other diseases.”
Cygnus XL from NG-23-and Northrop Grumman SS William called “Willie” McCool after one of the NASA astronauts who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia accident in Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003, on Wednesday (September 17) at 6:35 a.m. Edt (1035 GMT) on the ISS. The NG-23 Cygnus remains bound to the orbit laboratory until March 2026 when it is burned into the earth’s atmosphere.
Russia’s progress freighter – one of them I just arrived at the ISS on Saturday (September 13th) – is similarly available, but the third company ISS -Cargo Craft, the dragon capsule of SpaceX, is different.
